I started gardening in 1990 in Taos, New Mexico. I needed to find a way to ground myself because I earned my living as a channel. Taos is zone 1; you get 90 days to grow everything - June 1 to August 31. If you don’t have anything by then, you might as well just till it under.

In 1994, Haunt and I got married and I moved to San Francisco. It was a difficult move because he lived in an apartment. No garden. But within 8-9 months we had moved to the suburbs and I began to garden in a zone 11. It was so wonderful!

In 1996, I became a master gardener. I loved meeting new people that shared my passion, learning all about gardening from the ground up. I’d had no formal training before that. I just read a lot!

About that time, I fell in love with delphiniums and became a member of the Royal Delphinium Society when we went to the Chelsea flower show in 2001.  My focus was on English gardens and how much more intense they were than what I saw in America.

In 2003, we moved to 20 acres on a dry hillside in a California valley and I learned the meaning of the word heat. I started a large garden with a small well and lived to regret it. I couldn’t save the flowers from the heat in August no matter how much water I put on them. At the same time, marijuana growers had moved into the neighborhood and forest fires were raging so our well water dropped to almost nothing.  I began to see that it was a losing prospect.

I started looking for a new place to garden. That’s when channeling for myself came in handy.  I don’t usually channel for myself - it’s too difficult and too personal. But my voices started screaming at me to go to Oregon. I went; in 2010 we moved here, and started the gardens at Delphinium Hill.

The big Victorian we bought is surrounded by yet another 20 acres filled with fields of hay and cattle and views. Around the house, I’ve developed a beautiful English garden with hedges and flowers, pergolas and ponds, a small orchard, a very blue barn, and an English inspired vegetable patch.

No one in my immediate family gardens (my mother considered watering the plants gardening). I often wondered where I got such a passion. I was a theater person and was forced to wait to be cast in order to be creative. But in gardening, I am in control, and I took to it with great enthusiasm. I could create all day every day without waiting for anyone’s permission. It changed my environment and it changed me. Now, I can satisfy my craving for  beauty and I hope others can find their way to their passions of gardening, too.

This podcast is my attempt at giving back and helping others create their own beauty in their own world. I love doing it.
